How to Survive Family Photos Without Stress: The Do’s & Don’ts
Why Family Photo Sessions Don’t Have to Be Stressful!
Stress usually comes from unrealistic expectations. Children don’t need to be perfectly still, and parents don’t need to feel “photo ready.” When sessions are designed around connection instead of perfection, families relax — and that’s when authentic moments happen. My approach focuses on interaction, movement, and comfort so your session feels more like quality time than a task to check off your list.
Stress-Free Family Photo Session
Tips for Kids & Parents
By Sugar Divas Photography | Kearney, NE Family Photographer
Family photos don’t have to feel overwhelming — even with energetic kids and a camera-shy, or maybe even “grumpy” husband. With the right preparation, mindset, and photographer, your family photo session can actually be relaxed, fun, and meaningful. At Sugar Divas Photography, I’ve helped countless families in Kearney, Nebraska create natural, joy-filled portraits without the stress — and this guide shows you exactly how.
How to Prepare for a Stress-Free Family Photo Session
The secret to a smooth family photo session starts before you ever step in front of the camera. Preparing your kids (and your partner!) ahead of time sets expectations and removes unnecessary pressure. When everyone knows what to expect, the session flows more naturally — and the smiles come easier.
Family Photo Session Do’s:
What to Do for Happy Kids & Relaxed Parents
Do Get Everyone Prepared Before Your Family Photo Session
Talk to your kids about the session in a positive way. Let them know they’ll get to play, cuddle, and have fun together.
For partners who aren’t excited about photos, keep expectations simple — no stiff posing, just being themselves with the people they love. Preparation reduces anxiety and builds excitement.
Make sure you all have tried on your outfits and feel comfortable and stylish in a cohesive way before your session date.
Keep the day’s activities light-hearted and simple prior to your session. Having additional activities or a busy schedule the day of the shoot can add stress before you even get dressed. This naturally leads to having tired kids which leads to cranky kiddos, stressed mama, and grumpy hubby.
Do Make Family Photos Fun (Not Forced)
The best family photos come from play, laughter, and connection. Instead of forcing smiles, I guide families through prompts that encourage movement, giggles, and interaction. Walking, tickling, whispering jokes — these moments create genuine expressions that reflect your family’s true personality. During the session, I mix in a variety of wildflower picking, cuddles, tickles, nature exploring, and more fun things. I let my family take the lead here, and base my prompts and ideas off how you already interact and lean into your personalities as a family to create a light-hearted, fun atmosphere based on play and quality time. But don’t worry, I do still find a way to sneak in a few of those classic “looking at the camera” images too. If the kids are running low on patience, I may have us take a break or shift to capturing their attention on something fun to do instead of posing and smiling. I may ask that you guys don’t even look at me at all and just take a minute to chat as a family, dance or walk together, throw rocks into the water or whatever the moment calls for just to keep the action going. These images often times turn out to be some of the most special photos in the gallery!
Do Bring Snacks, Break Toys & Comfort Items
Snacks, water, and comfort items are lifesavers during family photo sessions. A quick snack break can reset moods and energy levels, especially for younger children. Familiar toys or small comfort items help kids feel secure in a new environment, which leads to more natural expressions and happier photos. Pro tip: Choose snacks and drinks that are dye-free, and chocolate free. These tend to leave colorful messy faces and fingers.
Family Photo Session Don’ts:
What Causes Stress & How to Avoid It
Don’t Schedule Family Photos During a Big Game (Yes, This Matters!)
If your husband is a die-hard sports fan, one of the easiest ways to guarantee his cooperation during your family photo session is surprisingly simple: don’t schedule it during an important game. For Nebraska families, that might mean avoiding kickoff during a Husker game — because no one wants to be smiling for photos while mentally tracking the score. When dads aren’t distracted or feeling rushed, they’re more relaxed, present, and genuinely enjoying the moment — which always shows in the photos.
Don’t Force Smiles When Kids Need a Break
Children (and adults!) need breaks sometimes. If a child feels overwhelmed, giving them a moment to reset often results in better cooperation later. I build flexibility into every session so kids feel heard and respected — and that trust shows beautifully in your images.

How to Get Dad Involved in Family Photos
(Without the Stress)
Do’s & Don’ts: Husband edition!
Nebraska dads are used to showing up and getting things done — but family photos work best when they’re approached as quality time, not a task or a chore. Think of the session as a short break to hang out with your family, not something to “get through.” When dads lean into the experience, their energy sets the tone for everyone else. Lead with curiosity and a playful attitude, and leave the disciplinary side at home. Kids respond better for photos when we keep it fun and yell less. Rumor has it, kids feel your stress levels too, and react to it, most of the time by acting out. By keeping your voices calm, and heart rates too, kids will feel more at ease. If we need to take it slower and let the kids run crazy (within safe limits), for a minute, let’s do that!
Do Plan Around What Matters to You (& your Husband)
Whether it’s avoiding a Husker game, a long workday, or a busy weekend, choosing the right session time makes a huge difference. When dads feel considered in the planning process, they’re more relaxed and invested in the experience.
Do Remember These Photos Are for More Than Just Today
It’s easy to focus on how you look right now — but these photos will mean something different in five, ten, or twenty years. They’ll show your kids how loved they were and how present you were in their lives. That’s worth showing up for.
Don’t Assume He Knows What to Wear (Help Him Out)
Most husbands are happy to show up — but choosing outfits isn’t always their strong suit. Avoid last-minute stress by planning outfits ahead of time and laying them out the night before. When dads feel confident in what they’re wearing (and know they don’t clash), it removes a big mental hurdle and sets a better tone for the session.
Don’t Worry About “Looking Posed” (Dads Excel at Real Moments)
Some of the most meaningful images happen when dads are playing, laughing, or comforting their children. These unscripted moments showcase real relationships — and often become the images families treasure most.
