A few practical tips for styling your Holiday Family mini session
Okay, so you’ve done the hard part! You’ve checked out all the local photographers, selected the one you like best for their style, quality and for your budget, and booked your mini session. Now what? It’s time to start putting together your family’s outfits!
Choosing what to wear for winter holiday mini sessions can feel overwhelming for many. It’s not just about picking something cute—it’s about finding outfits that complement each other, suit the colder weather, and highlight your family’s unique style without stress. Shopping for the whole family, especially with little ones who may not love trying on clothes, can quickly become a challenge. You don’t need to be runway models or social media trendsetters, but putting thoughtful effort into your holiday outfits ensures your photos truly shine.
Poor wardrobe choices can detract from your beautiful memories, so planning ahead is key. To make this easier, I’ve put together a selection of cozy, classic winter holiday looks, featuring rich textures and festive colors perfect for holiday mini sessions. These styles work beautifully for outdoor winter settings, from snow-dusted trees to twinkling lights, helping your family look timeless and comfortable all at once.
Okay…so time for some outfit “show & tell” inspiration board style!
To make your holiday mini session with a touch of winter cheer effortless, I’ve put together curated style boards for families of all sizes—whether you’re a family of three, four, or five. These carefully selected looks will set you on the perfect path for your session. The best part? You can shop all the outfits directly through my Amazon Wish List, or my recommended websites like Joyfolie, and Baltic Born. Each outfit inspiration board was designed with cozy winter themes in mind, ideal for capturing your family’s festive spirit. Feel free to replicate the looks exactly or use them as a starting point to find outfits that you love and that suit your family best. Don’t forget to take advantage of my Amazon shopping list, favorite online boutiques, and my client closet for convenient styling options.
When looking for outfits, try to find a print, color scheme or outfit you love and are inspired by, either for you, your child or your spouse. Use that outfit as your starting point to curate the rest of the looks. It helps if your outfit has a remade color palette or print to help you pull color for the other outfits from. Use a mix of solids, prints, and textures to create a cohesive, well-coordinated look. Remember to use layers when possible and find shoes that match the look and are clean, work with the location you are taking pictures in, and be sure to share your photos of your outfits with your photographer! This greatly helps us photographers to find the perfect locations for your outfits and the vibe you have in mind. This “Earthy Tones” style board would be very versatile in any natural outdoor space and good for spring through fall colors as well! Plus, these are outfits your whole family can rewear during the year!
